The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque (its real name) was built according to the vision of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, founding father of the United Arab Emirates. At the time, he wanted to create a welcoming cultural haven that would inspire people from all walks of life. Dreamed by Sheikh Zayed in the 1980s, the construction of the Grand Mosque of Abu Dhabi began on November 5, 1996 and was completed eleven years later in 2007. Sheikh Zayed, who died in 2004, will not see the realization of his project and now rests in peace inside the mosque.
This building is the largest mosque in Abu Dhabi and the country, the ninth largest mosque in the world and above all one of the most beautiful. The late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan had this mosque built so that it would have a historical impact by symbolizing the greatness and pride of his country. Sheikh Zayed also wanted the Grand Mosque to embody Islam’s message of peace, tolerance and diversity. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque was imagined and designed to surprise with its beauty, its grandeur and its clarity… The Sheikh succeeded, because really, everything there is surprising!
